It appears that the Minister of Status of Women Minister, Rona Ambrose, doesn't fully appreciate what she is supposed to be doing, or that she may have forgotten that she is a woman. Why else would she have proposed a bill that would effectively put the rights of every woman in Canada into the hands of a male dominated committee.
What is it with some people who want to open old wounds, or create new ones to play in. Is it not hard enough getting the respect you deserve without throwing this at every women in Canada.
The decision to have an abortion has got to be one of the hardest things any woman has got to go through, for what ever reason. The decision to do so or not must lie with her, not with some faceless committee in Ottawa, or Washington, or Rome. The woman must be able to access unbiased information, not whatever some special interest group deems proper to ram down her throat.
Mr Harper, the Minister of Status of Women is your responsibility. You voted against the bill, was it because you feel it was the right thing to do or were you using one of your colleagues to further your own agenda? What are you going to do about the problem that you created?
And now for something new
I have set up a new blog that will be only my poetry
Please come have a look and enjoy

Republican women, please take note
Did you know this?
Do you want these people in power?
I am a man, and this shit is offensive to me, how can you still belong to this group? If not for you, think of your daughters, your sisters daughters. Can you bring yourself to condemn them to the horror the the Republicans will create for women?
Think about it. Your body belongs to YOU

So you don't work
Work is defined as moving a mass through a space.
How often have you heard this conversation...
"I stay at home to raise my children"
"Oh, so you don't work."
How can people say that and not realise just how insulting those words are - you don't work. Just what did your mother do while you were growing up? Sit on the couch eating bon bons and watching a soap opera? I don't know about you, but my mother washed my clothes, did my laundry, cooked my meals, made sure I got to my doctors appointment, taught me my ABCs long before I got to "school", and, and, and.... The mother of my children did the same.
Women of today are being told that they are not to be valued every time the words "oh, so you don't work." More often than not, I hear those words from other women who "work".
Little Johnny and Jane are 2 years old. Mom is told in order to be of value, she has to go to work. What does Mom do with little Johnny and Jane? She sends them to the day care down the street where someone else feeds them, keeps them safe, teaches them their ABC. More often that not, this person at the daycare is a woman. Why is she valued and not the woman who stays at home to raise little Johnny and Jane?
Don't look at the woman who raises her own kids and say she isn't working. Remember, once your mother had you to raise.

Women in "Sports"
Okay, the time for being coy is over. My morning walk to work gives me the opportunity to listen to The Islands Rock, 100.3 - The Q. Really a great way to start the day (Ed and Cliff, take a bow). Anyway, the first post of my day usually comes from listening to Cliffs Call and today is no exception (Cliff take another bow)
Women in "sports". Women make up about 50% of the population and yet they still have to fight to be recognized as being just as capable of doing everything that men do and sports is just one more place they have to fight. I know a dozen ladies who I would not arm wrestle with, or challange to a race, or try to out lift. There are hundreds of lady athletes out there who work out, sweat and toil to be the best that they can be and yet in order for them to be recognized, they have to show some skin - or a lot of it. Cliff was saying he got to watch a lingerie football last night. He mentioned how tough these ladies were, the drive that they had and how athletic they were and yet, the only reason that the majority of the male audience was tuned in was to see some skin. While the appreciation of a well tuned body is natural, to do the work and only be appreciated for the amount of skin you show I find insulting.
Women's volleyball at the Olympics, another fine example of what women are considered to be. Nice tight and very skimpy bikinis, every curve highly defined and with the instant replay and high definition photography, every movement is zoomed in on and presented to the male libido. One of the official broadcasters even made a short video of the most titillating movements of the women and set it to some very cheese music. I watched about 1/4 of it and all I could think of was a 80's soft porn movie.
Ice dancing, syncro swimming are two other examples that immediately come to mind. Stop looking at the skin and see what these ladies are doing. See that they have to work as hard as their male counterparts to be able to do what they do and remember, it could be your daughter up there being drooled over.

To The Republican Women of the US
Did you know that the party you support activity hates you? Did you know that they want complete and total control of your body? Are you okay with the thought that some well to do white male is going to make you a second class citizen? You don't think so?
According to CNN, "Republicans drafting their party's official policy platform on Tuesday ratified a call for a Constitutional ban on abortion that makes no exceptions for rape or incest. The party's official stance on abortion was approved after just a few minutes of discussion. The language in the platform must be voted on before the full Republican Convention next week, though Republicans say it is all but certain to pass."
No exception for rape or incest and it took these white males just a few minutes to stuff you to the back of the bus where you belong.
How is it possible that any woman out there can vote Republican? How can you look at yourselves in the mirror and believe you are a citizen of the US, with all the rights and privileges that entails, when you are letting these rich white men decide what is the right thing for you, or your 13 year old daughter who has been raped by her father for the past 3 years - and no, don't come back with incest isn't rape.
Being pregnant is a huge thing to happen to anyone. The woman's body is changed in so many ways science hasn't classified them all yet. Not every woman is ready or able to go through childbirth. That is a fact of life, not everyone can do this. For some women, childbirth presents a very real danger of physical harm to the point of death - the Republican Party will to condemn those women to whatever fate awaits them.
There are people out there who feel abortions for any reason are wrong; fine, it is your right to make that decision for yourself. You do not have the right to make that choice for his wife, her daughter, the kid down the street, or anyone.
Ladies of the US, are you going to let this happen to you and your daughters and sisters and mothers?

Woman Abuse in Afghanistan
Today I woke up and thought of another great crime that was being committed, the abuse of women over in Afghanistan.
How horrible is it to hear of child brides, women not being able to drive, "honour" killings, women being forced to wear specific types of clothing, being denied access to medicine,.....
The list goes on and on. These terrible things happen daily and it is all blamed on the ancient traditions of the people. How convenient to have such a ready made excuse.
What can be done to stop this from continuing? Well, right now there is a multinational force in Afghanistan, out there, amongst other things, to stop this horror from being perpetuated. At this moment, the main part of the multinational force is the US. It is good to know how wonderful things are in the developed, civilized world.
Or is it?
How many times do you hear of a women getting raped and then having to suffer through the humiliation of watching the attacker sneer at here while she is put on trial for "asking for it".
And what about Mr Santorum, the guy who wants to run the US (God help us all). Did he not say that any woman who is raped and a child is conceived of that rape, that the woman should carry that "gift from God" to term. What kind of crap is that? Is it any less horrific than what is happening in Afghanistan?
Down in the US, women have to look hard to find access to an abortion, even if it is medically necessary. Then, if they find a way, they have to brave the religious zealots who are sitting in front of those offices. The same people who say life is sacred are the very ones who are shooting Doctors.
"But that is what is written in the Bible!" they call to their defence. Yes, the bible, written thousands of years ago by, Men. Yes, men. And don't throw that "they were spoken to by God to write it" crap. The guys who shot JFK, the pope, John Lennon, they were all "spoken to by God" and we have decided that they were all crazy.
Yes, women are being abused in horrible ways in Afghanistan and many other areas of the world.
Let us not stand up showing how great we are over here until it can be said the same thing doesn't happen here.
