The Story Before

Driving home after a brief stop at the Baby Booty Shop, he thought just how cute little Sarah was going to look in her new shoes. Only 1 year old and already so big.
He had agonized over which pair he should get, so many colours, so many styles. After what seemed to be an eternity, he finally chosen the pale green shoes with the red stripe down the side. Sarah would be a little darling with her red dress and new shoes.

The car turned around the corner, finally pointing toward home. He could almost see those shoes on her little feet and how happy she would be to see daddy again. As he pulled car up the driveway, he noticed the police cruiser parked in front of his house. Thinking nothing of it, he turned up the driveway, parked the car, picked up the box with the shoes and walked up to the front door of his house.

The door opened in front of him, a police officer standing behind the open door.
"Mr Smith, " the officer began, "I am sorry to say..."
The rest of the officers words were lost as he saw his wife sitting on the couch, her head buried in her hands.

She leaped up and jumped into his arms "OH FRANK," she wailed "SARAH, SHE'S...." her voice was drowned by a fresh storm of crying.

The next day, a classified add in the newspaper read

"For sale: baby shoes, never used."

This short story was inspired by the very short story Baby Shoes
written by Mr Ernest Hemingway.

    1. I recently read the story Baby Shoes, written by Ernest Hemingway. That story inspired me to write a short story that could have happened in the time immediately before the time setting of Baby Shoes.
